My Insane and Bold Prediction of the Week
Every week, I’ll make a crazy but somewhat legitimate prediction for an upset in the college football world.
Last week, I picked Northwestern over Michigan State and the Insane and Bold Prediction nearly came away with an upset two weeks in a row. Michigan State shut Northwestern down late in the game and surged from behind to win 35-27.
NC State “upset” Florida State last night, but that’s hardly a big upset. Florida State was ranked a bit too high at #16 and the Wolfpack are now in good position to win the ACC Atlantic Division. I”m sure NC State will be ranked next week.
Moving along. Here’s this week’s upset special:
Ole Miss stuns Auburn in Oxford.
The Line: Auburn -7
Auburn is traveling outside of the friendly environment of Jordan-Hare Stadium for only the third time this season. Despite being 3-4, the Ole Miss fans will be ready to pack Vaught-Hemingway Stadium out and make things difficult for the #1 Tigers.
Houston Nutt is great in the underdog role and by great I mean dangerous. He’s been in this position many times and the Rebels have enough offensive firepower to hang with the Tigers. These are two offenses that have a run first mentality, although I think Ole Miss QB, Jeremiah Masoli, can hurt Auburn in the air as well. I’m still not convinced that Cam Newton can hurt teams in the air, but he really hasn’t needed to do that so far.
There are red flags: Ole Miss hasn’t played great at home, but they have won their last two games so perhaps they have put their early season troubles behind them. Ole Miss is 101st in scoring defense. They allow just over 32 points per game, but they are averaging 31. However, Auburn isn’t exactly adept at stopping the opposing offense either.
OUTCOME: Defense probably won’t factor into the game too much tomorrow. It will come down to who can make the other team punt once or twice. I think Houston Nutt is going to have some tricks up his sleeve and Ole Miss is going to catch Auburn napping. Ole Miss has dropped two straight on the road in tough venues, but they will be eager to knock off the #1 team. I think the pressure is going to get to the newly annointed #1 team. I look for Cam Newton to make some mistakes in the air and that will be the difference maker.
Auburn has won games by the skin of their teeth all season long and they have won both of their road games by 3 points each. Ole Miss is just as capable as Mississippi State and Kentucky of keeping this game close. Watch for the Rebels to try and air it out early and open up the running game on the Auburn defense. Trouble is on the horizon for the Tigers.
Ole Miss wins 33-30.
